International degree students must enter China with the appropriate X student visa.
- An X1 visa is generally issued for study lasting more than 180 days. Most international degree students should apply for an X1 visa.
- An X2 visa is generally issued for study lasting no more than 180 days.
Students outside China
After receiving your electronic SJTU Admission Notice and JW201/JW202 or DQ Form, apply through the Chinese embassy, consulate or visa application center responsible for your place of residence.
The application normally requires:
- a valid passport;
- the SJTU Admission Notice;
- the applicable JW201/JW202 or DQ Form;
- a physical examination report, if required by the responsible embassy or consulate; and
- any additional locally required documents.
Always check the latest requirements of the responsible Chinese embassy, consulate or visa application center before submitting your application.
Degree students must enter China with the appropriate X visa before registration. Students entering China without a valid study visa may NOT be able to complete University registration or enrollment.
Planning Your Entry with an X1 Visa
X1 visa holders must normally apply for a study residence permit within 30 days of entering China.
Do not arrive excessively early. Your visa must still be valid when you complete on-site registration, and you must leave sufficient time after registration to complete the physical examination and residence permit application.
Students Already in China
Students already in China must hold either:
- a valid X visa; or
- a valid study residence permit.
Students without an appropriate study visa or residence permit may not be able to complete enrollment.
If a physical examination or verification is required, complete it according to the University's instructions before applying for the study residence permit.
