M87* One Year Later: Proof of a Persistent Black Hole Shadow
The Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration has released new images of M87* from observations taken in April 2018, one year after the first observations in April 2017. The new observations in 2018, which feature the first participation of the Greenland Telescope, reveal a familiar, bright ring of emission of the same size as we found in 2017. This bright ring surrounds a dark central shadow, and the brightest part of the ring in 2018 has shifted by about 30º relative from 2017 to now lie in the 5 o’clock position. Read More

Pressure Driven Fractionalization of Ionic Spins Results in Cuprate-like High-Tc Superconductivity in La₃Ni₂O₇
Scientists in Tsung-Dao Lee Institute discover an unorthodox fractionalization of ionic spin in the recent discovered high-Tc superconductor La3Ni2O7 . This pressure-driven phenomenon results in an effective description similar to that of the high-temperature superconducting cuprates and thereby phenomenologically explaining the recently discovered high-temperature superconductivity in this material. Modeling the M87 Jet: Why Do Black Hole Jets Shine and Pierce the Cosmic Sky?
There are two models for the formation of black hole jets: one involves extracting rotational energy from the black hole and the other from the accretion disk. However, can these two dynamical models explain the observational results of the jets? Which model is correct? Recently, an international collaboration led by Prof. Feng Yuan from the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory addressed these questions and provided answers. Read More
