Using Optical Cavity to Engineer Band Structure of Materials
The twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) system is one of the important discoveries in condensed matter physics in recent years. It has become an extremely rich platform for studying quantum many-body physics. Especially at a specific twist angle, the so-called "magic angle" (approximately 1.05 degrees), TBG undergoes a superconducting phase transition. Although the origin of exotic superconductivity in TBG remains a controversial topic, it is generally believed that the flat-band effect plays an essential role. However, since TBG is not a stable configuration at the magic angle, it is often difficult to accurately prepare magic-angle graphene experimentally. Experiments have observed that when the twist angle deviates from the magic angle by 0.1 degrees, the superconducting phase disappears. This instability has limited extensive research on superconducting properties in TBG. Read More

Discovery of an Intriguing World Sized Between Earth and Venus
An international team has successfully discovered a new extrasolar planet named Gliese 12b through a collaboration between a strategic survey program (SSP) of the Subaru Telescope and NASA’s TESS campaign. Gliese 12b has a size similar to Earth and Venus, and is orbiting around its host star, Gliese 12, with a period of 12.8 days. Despite its close proximity to its host star, the amount of radiation Gliese 12b receives is comparable to that of Venus, because the host star is much cooler than the Sun. The planet may still retain a certain amount of atmosphere, making it one of the most suitable targets out of all of the planets discovered so far to investigate the atmosphere of a planet like Venus. In the near future, James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and extremely large telescopes, such as TMT, will be used to characterize the atmosphere of Gliese 12b in detail. Read More

A Solemn and Warm Celebration: TDLI Commemorates 2024 Graduates
On June 27th, TDLI held a grand graduation ceremony and degree conferral for its 2024 graduates in the N400 conference room. Attended by the Institute's Party Committee Deputy Secretary Li Shu, Assistant Director Li Sheng, faculty representatives, graduates, and their families, the ceremony was a testament to the Institute's commitment to nurturing globally-minded and innovative postgraduates. The graduates, the first to reside in Zhangjiang, have grown alongside the Institute, focusing on their research and the Institute's development. All graduates are set to pursue further studies or research globally. The ceremony included speeches, degree conferrals, honors, and heartfelt stories from the graduates, culminating in a shared celebration with a graduation cake.
