15 Researchers from TDLI Selected for Pudong's "Pearl Program"
On December 7, 2024, at the Pudong International Talent Port Forum held in Zhangjiang Science Hall, 15 researchers from TDLI were announced as part of the Pudong New Area's "Pearl Program." This selection includes 2 "Pearl Leading Talents," 12 "Pearl Elite Talents," and 1 "Pearl Engineer." The "Pearl Program" aims to attract and cultivate high-level overseas talent to drive scientific innovation and technological self-innovation, with over 1300 individuals selected this year following the initial 800 in 2023. TWAS Announces 2024 Slate of Awards, Hong Ding was Awarded
In 14 November 2024, The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS) awards were unveiled, with 25 scholars from 13 countries, including China, India, and Malaysia, sharing the awards in 11 scientific fields (Economics, Agriculture, Nutrition & Food Systems Sciences, Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Earth, Climate & Environmental Sciences, Engineering & Computer Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Medical & Health Sciences, Physics, Astronomy & Space Sciences, Social Sciences) of which 8 Chinese scholars were honored. Hong Ding, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, T. D. Lee Chair Professor was awarded with 2024 TWAS Award in Physics, Astronomy and Space Sciences (shared) “For his seminal contributions to discoveries of the Weyl fermion and other novel topology-related quasiparticles in solids”. TDLI Expands Ties with UK Universities
A delegation from TDL, led by Director and Academician Jie Zhang, conducted a three-day visit to University College London (UCL) and the University of Oxford to strengthen international academic collaboration and partnerships with top UK institutions. No.18 T. D. Lee Colloquium by Prof.Thors Hans Hansson
On the afternoon of October 10, Professor Thors Hans Hansson, the member of the Nobel committee for Physics (2014-2022), visited TDLI and delivered the 18th T. D. Lee Colloquium on "Anyons — From Theory to Experiments", after the talk he shared his insight to the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics. Professor Xiaogang He, Dong Lai (visiting) and Jianglai Liu, as well as more than 100 of students, postdocs, faculty and etc., have participated in the colloquium via onsite and online method. David Gross, 2004 Nobel laureate in Physics, delivered the inaugural lecture of T. D. Lee Master Lecture Series titled Fifty Years of Quantum Chromodynamics-The Theory of The Strong Nuclear Force, to an enthusiastic audience of more than 300 students, academics and interested individuals. The lecture, hosted by Academician Jie Zhang, Director of TDLI, attracted attendees from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, ShanghaiTech University, Fudan University, CAS Shanghai Institutes for Advanced Studies, COMAC Shanghai Aircraft Design and Research Institute, Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility, Zhangjiang Laboratory, School Affiliated to ShanghaiTech University, etc. An additional 4,400 viewers joined the event online. Gérard Mourou, 2018 Nobel laureate in Physics, delivered the second lecture of T. D. Lee Master Lecture Series titled Extreme Light: Bridging Optics and Fundamental High Energy Physics, first steps Towards Zeptosecond and Zettawatt Science, to an enthusiastic audience of around 300 students, academics and interested individuals. The lecture, hosted by Academician Jie Zhang, Director of TDLI, attracted attendees from more than 50 institutions, including Shanghai Jiao Tong University, ShanghaiTech University, CAS Shanghai Institutes for Advanced Studies, COMAC Shanghai Aircraft Design and Research Institute, Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility, Zhangjiang Laboratory, etc. An additional 2,700 viewers joined the event online. No.19 T. D. Lee Colloquium by Prof. Zheng-Tian Lu
On the afternoon of November 21, Professor Zheng-Tian Lu from the University of Science and Technology of China visited the Tsung-Dao Lee Institute (TDLI) to present the 19th T. D. Lee Colloquium. His lecture, titled "Identifying Old Ice and Water with Single-Atom Counting," captivated an audience of over 30 students, postdocs, and faculty members attending in person. Other events
- The 4th Asian-European-Institutes Workshop for Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) Physics was successfully held at TDLI, from October 8 to 11. The workshop, co-hosted by the institute and several international research institutions, aimed to advance research in particle physics and cosmology beyond the standard model. Over 70 experts from China, South Korea, Japan, the UK, and other countries discussed the latest research findings and future trends in BSM physics during the four-day event, which included 42 invited talks and a special session for young researchers. The workshop provided a valuable platform for global scientific exchange and collaboration in the field. Read More

TDLI successfully hosted the international conference "Transient Phenomena and Physical Processes around Supermassive Black Holes" from October 18-21. The event gathered over 90 astrophysicists and students worldwide to discuss emerging time-domain astronomy and astrophysical topics related to supermassive black holes. The conference featured discussions on tidal disruption events, quasi-periodic eruptions, and the latest observational data and theoretical research in the field, providing a platform for global scientists to share insights and collaborate on understanding the phenomena surrounding supermassive black holes. PandaX Team's Recent Progress Recognized by APS
The American Physical Society (APS) has highlighted the PandaX team's research as one of the "Highlights of the Year 2024." The team, led by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, achieved a milestone in dark matter detection. In the "Highlights of the Year" section, APS website noted the PandaX team's achievement: "This year also marked the point when searches for dark matter became sensitive enough to detect a potentially bedeviling background: neutrinos streaming from the Sun." Successful Muon and Positron Beam Test for MuEDM Experiment at PSI
From October 28 to November 5, an international team of scientists successfully conducted a one-week muon and positron beam test at the πE1 Muon Beamline of the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Switzerland. Led by Kim Siang Khaw's team from the Tsung-Dao Lee Institute at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the study evaluated the Muon Trigger Detector prototype for the muEDM experiment.
