The conditional luminosity function measurements challenge the galaxy formation and evolution theories at low-mass end
Professor Xiaohu Yang's research team at the Tsung-Dao Lee Institute and the School of Physics and Astronomy, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, has recently, for the first time, attained precise measurements of the conditional luminosity function and conditional stellar mass function of galaxies at the very faint/low-mass ends. This was accomplished using photometric and spectroscopic data from DESI LS DR9, SV3, and Y1. The research shows that at low redshift, the slope of the conditional luminosity (stellar mass) function of galaxies below 109 h-2L☉(h-2M☉) diverges from extrapolations of earlier work with significantly enhanced low mass end slope. This finding points to the existence of numerous low-mass satellite galaxies within dark halos, which were accreted into halos along with substructures. Read More

Yim et al. reveals a doped Mott-insulating surface can, through charge-disproportionation, form an insulating ground state that is distinct from the hidden Mott-insulating state in the bulk
Recently, T. D. Lee (Tenure-track) Fellow Chi Ming Yim of Tsung Dao Lee Institute, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, together with research groups of Prof. Peter Wahl and Prof. Phil D. C. King of University of St Andrews (United Kingdom), Prof. Silvia Picozzi of CNR-SPIN (Italy) and Prof. Andrew Mackenzie of MPI-CPfS (Germany) published a research article titled “Avoided metallicity in a hole-doped Mott insulator on a triangular lattice” in Nature Communications. The article points out that a doped Mott-insulating surface can stabilize itself through charge disproportionation into an insulating ground state that is distinct from its hidden Mott insulating state in the bulk. Exploring a Fifth Force via the Trajectory of Asteroid Bennu
Recently, Luca Visinelli, TDLI Tenure-track Fellow, co-authored an article titled 'Constraints on Fifth Forces and Ultralight Dark Matter from OSIRIS-REx Target Asteroid Bennu,' published in Communications Physics, a journal of Nature Portfolio. The article points out that asteroids and other celestial objects are promising probes to delve into new physics phenomena, and it performs an analisis using data from asteroid tracking to place constraints on the strength of new forces at the Solar System scale. These results demonstrate the potential of asteroid tracking in probing well-motivated extensions of the Standard Model and possibly dark matter scenarios. Read More
