TDLI International Research Internship Program

The TDLI International Research Internship Program supports short‑term, project‑based research visits by international students. Applications are accepted throughout the year.

Research opportunities may be available in:

  • astronomy and astrophysics;
  • condensed matter physics; and
  • particle and nuclear physics.

Finding a Project and Supervisor

The projects listed on the program page are examples and do not represent all possible research opportunities at TDLI.

Applicants may:

  • apply for one of the listed projects;
  • explore TDLI’s research divisions and supervisor profiles; or
  • contact any TDLI professor whose research interests align with their own and ask whether the professor would be interested in developing a suitable short‑term project together.

A visit can proceed only after a TDLI faculty member agrees to serve as the supervisor. The student and supervisor should discuss the proposed research topic, scope, visit dates, expected outcomes and possible funding before beginning the formal application. TDLI’s existing program page likewise directs applicants to identify aligned researchers and discuss funding, duration and project scope with the prospective supervisor.

How to Apply

Step 1: Contact a Prospective Supervisor

Contact one or more TDLI professors directly by email.

Your email should include:

  • an English CV in PDF format;
  • a brief personal statement;
  • a research or study plan of approximately one to two pages;
  • your proposed visit dates; and
  • the research topic or area that interests you.

You may refer to an existing project or propose a topic related to the professor’s research.

Step 2: Confirm the Visit with the Supervisor

If a professor is interested in hosting you, discuss and confirm:

  • the proposed research project;
  • the expected duration and dates of the visit;
  • the supervision arrangements;
  • the anticipated research activities and outcomes; and
  • how the visit will be funded.

The supervisor should then complete and sign the Visiting Student Program Clarification, confirming the proposed project and supervision arrangement.

Step 3: Submit the Nomination Materials to TDLI

Send the following documents to Zhao Yu at zhao.yu@sjtu.edu.cn, with your TDLI supervisor copied on the email:

  1. the signed Visiting Student Program Clarification;
  2. a PDF scan of your passport bio page; and
  3. confirmation of the email address you will use to access the SJTU visiting‑student application system.

Please check the email address carefully. Once it has been entered into the SJTU nomination system, it cannot normally be changed.

Step 4: Complete the SJTU Online Application

After TDLI submits the nomination, SJTU will send an application link to your confirmed email address.

Complete the online application and upload all materials requested by the system. Please notify the TDLI coordinator after submitting the application.

Step 5: Complete Admission and Pre‑arrival Procedures

After the application is approved, the student will receive:

  • an electronic SJTU Admission Notice; and
  • a JW202 or DQ Form, where visa application documents are required.

Follow the instructions in the admission email regarding:

  • visa arrangements;
  • medical insurance;
  • jAccount creation;
  • registration documents; and
  • arrival procedures.

Students will normally be asked to submit a scan of their visa page, where applicable, and proof of medical insurance before registration is completed. The current TDLI email workflow follows this supervisor‑first, nomination and online‑application process.

For general requirements, see:

  • 3.2 Visa & Residence Permit
  • 3.3 Insurance & Medical Care
  • 3.1 Housing

Funding

Funding is not automatically provided with admission to the program. Students should discuss the funding arrangement with the prospective supervisor before confirming the visit.

A visit may be supported through one or more of the following:

  • self‑funding by the student;
  • a research grant held by the TDLI supervisor, where funding is available and the supervisor agrees to provide support;
  • a scholarship, travel grant or research‑mobility grant from the student's home university;
  • China Scholarship Council funding or another external scholarship program; or
  • another scholarship or funding opportunity for which the student and proposed visit are eligible.

Applicants may explore current opportunities through:

SJTU Scholarship Opportunities

The SJTU scholarship directory includes Chinese Government Scholarship, Shanghai Government Scholarship, SJTU Scholarship and other schemes. However, many scholarship programs are intended primarily for degree students and may not cover short‑term non‑degree research visits.

Applicants should verify the eligibility, application channel, deadline and permitted funding period directly with the scholarship provider.

Funding should not be considered confirmed until the student has received written confirmation from the supervisor, scholarship provider or other funding organization.
