On April 4, a signing ceremony for the strategic cooperation agreement between Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the People's Government of Pudong New Area to jointly establish the Zhangjiang Quantum Science and Technology Research Base was held at SJTU's Minhang Campus. The University will leverage this partnership to collaborate with Pudong New Area in building a globally influential hub for quantum science and technology innovation. Read more

On April 12, a TDLI delegation led by Director Jie Zhang visited Tsinghua University's Department of Physics for discussions on disciplinary development, research, and talent cultivation. Both sides agreed to launch bilateral academic forums and exchange programs. Jie Zhang also gave an invited lecture on laser fusion and held a dialogue with students. TRIDENT Project Successfully Completed Integrated Deep-Sea Test at a Depth of 3,500 Meters
|

Supported by the National Key Research and Development Program of China, the TRIDENT Project team recently conducted a sea test of deep-sea neutrino detection equipment aboard the R/V Haiyang Dizhi II near the preselected TRIDENT Basin site. The successful test laid a solid foundation for Phase I construction. Read more

A Smooth Handover: PandaX-4T Completed Its Operational Phase as PandaX Enters the 20-Ton Era
|

At 15:56 on April 17, the PandaX-4T detector, located 2,400 meters underground in the Jinping Underground Laboratory in Sichuan, completed Run 11162 and was shut down as scheduled. PandaX-4T operated successfully for a total of 1,465 days and completed its mission for this phase of the experiment. The PandaX collaboration shifted its focus to the construction of the next-generation twenty-ton-scale detector, PandaX-20T. Read more

Congratulations! Shanghai Jiao Tong University Muon Physics Team Shared Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics
|

The 2026 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics was awarded jointly to the three-generation muon anomalous magnetic moment experimental collaborations (the Muon g-2 Collaborations) at CERN, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. This prize is one of the three major categories of the Breakthrough Prize, with a single award of $3 million, and is often referred to as the "Oscars of Science." Among the three, the Fermilab Muon g-2 Collaboration played a particularly crucial role in this recognition, released its final measurement results in 2025, the Shanghai Jiao Tong University muon physics team shared this top international honor in fundamental physics alongside 376 researchers worldwide. ATLAS Team Selected for FOP 2025 Top Ten Physics Advances!

Recently, the results of the "2025 Top Ten Physics Advances" selection campaign were announced. The campaign was organized by Frontiers of Physics — a physics journal supervised by the Ministry of Education and published by Higher Education Press — in collaboration with KouShare Academic. The ATLAS research team from SJTU's Tsung‑Dao Lee Institute and School of Physics and Astronomy was selected for this prestigious list. Their featured work is titled "Important Experimental Progress in Higgs New Physics — The First 'Cosmology‑Consistent' Dark Higgs Search and the First Experimental Study of the Triple‑Higgs Process." The team includes postdoctoral scholar Changqiao Li and Jing Chen, doctoral students Qibin Liu and Xuliang Zhu, undergraduate students Qimin Jiang and Qi Cai, Tenured Fellow Shu Li, and Distinguished Fellow Haijun Yang. Only Two in the World! Huilin Qu, a Tenured Fellow at TDLI, Received the IUPAP C11 Young Scientist Award!

Recently, the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) Commission on Particles and Fields (C11) announced the recipients of the 2026 Early Career Scientist Prize. Qu Huilin, a Tenured Fellow at Tsung-Dao Lee Institute, has been awarded this prize in recognition of her key contributions and leading role in the development of advanced machine learning algorithms. These algorithms have significantly enhanced the identification capability of high-momentum heavy-particle decays and have been applied to important physical processes, such as the search for H→cc decays at the Large Hadron Collider. Notably, he is one of only two recipients worldwide of this prestigious award. Read more

Distinguished SJTU Alumnus Jun Ye Visited TDLI and Shares His Scientific Journey with Students
On the afternoon of April 8, TDLI hosted a special lecturel. The event featured Professor Jun Ye, a world-renowned physicist, member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, and Foreign Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, who returned to his alma mater to share his scientific journey and insights with students. Professor Ye is an alumnus of Shanghai Jiao Tong University's inaugural honors program, Class of 1989. The lecture drew an audience of over 150 students from the Tsung-Dao Lee Institute, Zhiyuan College, the School of Physics and Astronomy, and Pujiang International College. Read more

The 2nd PandaX-xT International Open Meeting was successfully held at the Tsung-Dao Lee Institute from April 6 to 12. This marked the second international open conference organized by the PandaX Collaboration since 2025. The meeting brought together nearly 100 researchers from countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan, Russia, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Australia, and so on. The conference was co-chaired by Professor Yifei Niu from Shanghai Jiao Tong University's School of Physics and Astronomy, Professor Jianglai Liu from Tsung-Dao Lee Institute, Professor Fedor Simkovic from Comenius University in Slovakia, and Professor Qing Lin from the University of Science and Technology of China. From April 9 to 10, A joint workshop on high-energy particle astrophysics science models and LHAASO intelligent engineering progress was recently held at the Tsung-Dao Lee Institute. The meeting was co-hosted by the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Tsung-Dao Lee Institute of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and organized by Tianfu Cosmic Ray Research Center. This workshop effectively facilitated exchange and collaboration among the project team in the field of artificial intelligence technologies. It also strengthened discussions and mutual learning with other large‑scale scientific facilities on AI applications, promoted the deep integration of AI with experimental facilities, and supported high‑quality scientific output and operational control for LHAASO. The meeting reviewed the laboratory's past‑year accomplishments and research advances, while also fostering substantive discussions on core scientific challenges and future strategic directions across all research fields. On April 29, Prof. Xiaofeng Wang from Tsinghua University was invited to visit Tsung-Dao Lee Institute and deliver the T. D. Lee Special Colloquium entitled "From Explosion Mechanisms to the Hubble Tension: Insights from Stellar Explosions". 30 faculty and students attended the lecture on site. From May 29 to 31, the 7th TRIDENT Collaboration Meeting and the 2nd International Cooperation Symposium were successfully held, alongside the inaugural meeting of the TRIDENT Neutrino Laboratory (Hainan). The event brought together over 60 experts and scholars from research institutions and universities both in China and abroad. The successful convening of this meeting marks significant progress for the TRIDENT Project in terms of collaborative organization, key technology validation, and engineering implementation support. Recently, Postdoctoral Scholar Xinju Guo and Tenure-track Fellow Longqing Yi from the Tsung-Dao Lee Institute of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, published a research paper titled "Helical Electron Beam Micro-Bunching by High-Order Modes in a Micro-Plasma Waveguide" in Advanced Science, proposing a new scheme for generating high-energy electron beams with tunable vortex structures. PandaX-4T Constrained Neutrino Self-Interactions and Dark Matter Self-Interactions: Latest Results from Theory-Experiment Collaboration
|

|
|
The PandaX Collaboration at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, in collaboration with the theory group led by Chair Professor Michael Ramsey-Musolf, has placed the most stringent laboratory constraints on neutrino self-interactions in the 0.8–2 MeV mass range using xenon-136 double-beta decay data. Combined with cosmic microwave background data, the team also set strong limits on dark matter self-interactions. The results, published in Physical Review Letters on June 18, 2026, highlight the power of PandaX double-beta decay research in probing new physics beyond the Standard Model. Read more

Lin reviewed his academic and research journey, shared the background of the planetary orbital migration theory, recounted his interactions with Hawking at Cambridge, and discussed the internationalization of Chinese astronomy and his expectations for young researchers, drawing on his experience in founding the Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics at Peking University. Congratulations! TDLI Students Achieved Outstanding Results in the 15th "Challenge Cup" Shanghai College Students' Entrepreneurship Plan Competition
|

|
From June 5 to 7, the 15th "Challenge Cup" Shanghai College Entrepreneurship Competition were held. SJTU won the "Winner's Cup", and TDLI competing for the first time, took home a First Prize. The winning project, "Muon Imaging — Safeguarding Megacities", was led by TDLI doctoral student Yinghe Wang and included 11 graduate students from TDLI and SJTU's School of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Civil Engineering — five of whom are international students. The advisors are TDLI Tenured Fellow Kim Siang Khaw and Ailan Che, a researcher from the School of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Civil Engineering. The project used cosmic‑ray muon imaging to solve key problems in underground detection for megacities — such as limited depth, high costs, and difficulty in continuous monitoring — offering a more accurate and affordable solution for urban safety.
