From October 16 to 17, 2025, a joint Condensed Matter Physics Workshop co-organized by the Tsung-Dao Lee Institute (TDLI) and the Weizmann Institute of Science was successfully held at TDLI. The event attracted nearly 60 participants from both institutions, including faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students, who held multidimensional and substantive discussions on the latest advances in condensed matter physics and related fields.

The workshop opened on the morning of October 16 with an opening ceremony. Prof. Yuval Oreg, Head of the Department of Condensed Matter Physics at the Weizmann Institute, and Prof. Hong Ding, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Deputy Director of TDLI, delivered opening remarks. Prof. Oreg provided a comprehensive overview of the Weizmann Institute’s core research directions in condensed matter physics, its current team structure, and future strategic plans. Prof. Ding, based on TDLI’s strategic positioning and development vision, outlined the institute’s distinctive research strengths in the field, milestone achievements, and promising avenues for future collaboration.
Following the opening ceremony, the workshop moved into academic session. Seventeen researchers from TDLI and the Weizmann Institute delivered focused presentations on cutting-edge topics such as unconventional superconductivity, non-Abelian braiding statistics, and their potential applications in next-generation quantum devices. Drawing on their latest findings, the speakers addressed theoretical breakthroughs, experimental designs, and technological prospects from diverse perspectives, offering participants a rich and stimulating academic experience. Participants engaged in enthusiastic and in-depth discussions on the core technologies, research challenges and future exploration directions presented in the reports.

During the workshop, Academecian Jie Zhang, Director of TDLI, Academecian Hong Ding, Deputy Director, Prof. Jianglai Liu, Deputy Director, and Ms. Shushu Li, Deputy Secretary of CPC TDLI Committee, held a working meeting with the Weizmann delegation. They discussed concrete plans for deepening collaboration in the next phase, including faculty and student exchanges, joint research projects, and co-supervised training programs. The delegation also engaged in close, in-depth exchanges with TDLI researchers. Beyond deepening mutual academic consensus and research trust, the event has also solidified a shared vision to develop it into an annual flagship activity.

The successful convening of this workshop marks a new phase in the international collaboration between the Tsung-Dao Lee Institute (TDLI) and the Weizmann Institute of Science in the field of condensed matter physics. Two institutions plan to host the next session at the Weizmann Institute of Science in 2026, with the goal of building a long-term, robust collaborative platform — thereby injecting enduring momentum into the development of the field.
