China's Political Season: Top scientist expects China to improve running of national laboratories in 2024

In its government work report, China says it will improve how it runs and manages national laboratories. One member of China's top political advisory body CPPCC, who's also a leading physician, says the efforts are key to achieving self-reliance in science and technology.

Premier Li talked about this in the report a number of times, and he mentioned national laboratories twice. First, when reviewing new breakthroughs in 2023 he mentioned we've made huge headway in establishing a system of national laboratories. Second, when talking about tasks for 2024, he also said we will improve the running of national laboratories. I think this is very important because national laboratories in China are a new thing. This strategic layout is vital for Chinese self-reliance and strength in science and technology. But how we should implement this new thing, well, it's still very challenging. I hope we can provide a complete demonstration and think about the mechanisms behind running the labs."
