Li Qiang paid a visit to Tsung-Dao Lee Institute (TDLI) on the afternoon of February 21st. He pointed out that TDLI needs to focus on scientific innovation, and strive for revealing discoveries and making breakthroughs, in order to further promote Shanghai into a science and technology center of global influence.

Devote to scientific research to throw light on the unknown and produce major achievements with global influence

TDLI, founded at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, is advancing the development of experimental platforms in Zhangjiang, Pudong. The institute strives to make breakthroughs in cutting-edge science questions including dark energy and dark matter.

Li Qiang heard the report on TDLI’s research progress presented by TDLI Director and CAS academician Zhang Jie.  He inspected the dark matter detection-related facility, deep-sea neutrino telescope, and a sand table of miniature astronomical telescope array in the Laboratory of Dark Matter and Neutrino, where Li Qiang asked about the progress and the plans.

He later visited the High-Performance Computing Center on the second floor where its functions for supporting fundamental research and the private sector’s support of fundamental research were elaborated.

Li Qiang stressed that fundamental research and innovation are pivotal to building science and technology independence and the development of the science and technology innovation center. Hence, TDLI needs to target major strategic research fields, accelerate the development of cutting-edge scientific instruments, gather strategic scientists and leading talents, center on innovation, and devote itself to scientific research in order to throw light on the unknown and produce major achievements with global influence.

Provide holistic talent services, and create quality environment to retain and nurture top talents

Over the past five years, TDLI has endeavored to build a world-leading team of innovative scientists full of vitality. Today, the institute has embraced 120 researchers from 17 countries and regions, among which 40% are foreign nationals and 80% have studied/worked in overseas leading research institutes.

Li Qiang talked with the Chinese and international researchers about both their work and life and listened to their advice on how to build Shanghai as an innovation center.

“World-leading scientific and technological talents play a key role in forming an international science and technology innovation center. Therefore, we not only need to build large-scale scientific facilities and open platforms but also need to provide holistic talent services and create a quality environment to retain and nurture top talents,” he said.

He added, “We fully support TDLI’s efforts of developing a world-leading research platform, attracting global scientists, and facilitating talents to be dedicated to exploring the unknown and making contributions to the cause of human science.”
