About TDLI

Tsung-Dao Lee Institute (TDLI) was founded in November 2016, following the proposal of Professor Tsung-Dao Lee, the prominent Chinese-American physicist and a laureate of the Nobel Prize in Physics, to promote fundamental science and to provide a platform for international scientific communications and collaborations. TDLI aims to become a world-leading research institute in Physics and Astronomy. It strives to build a source of original innovation and point of convergence for the world’s top scientists, a launching platform for the careers of young scholars. 

Currently, the Institute is advancing frontier research programs in the fields of Quantum Science & Technology, Particle & Nuclear Physics, and Astronomy & Astrophysics. We have more than a hundred faculty members from 17 countries and regions, of which over 40% are foreign nationals.

The building of TDLI, located in Zhangjiang Science City, was inaugurated in November 2021. The building covers an area of 56,000 square meters with 1,000 people capacity. The Institute will provide conducive working conditions and environment for the talents.

About NSFC Excellent Young Scholars Fund (Overseas)  

The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) Excellent Young Scholars Fund (Overseas) aims to attract and encourage overseas outstanding young scholars (including non-Chinese foreigners) who have made good achievements in natural science, engineering and technology to work in China. TDLI sincerely invites global talents to apply for the 2022 NSFC Excellent Young Scholars Fund (Overseas)!

Application Requirements

  • Abide by the laws and regulations of the People’s Republic of China, have good scientific ethics, and consciously practice the spirit of scientists in the new era
  • Born on or after January 1, 1982
  • Have a doctorate degree
  • In principle, applicants should have obtained a formal teaching or research position in an overseas university, college or scientific research institute for more than 36 consecutive months before April 15, 2022. (For those applicants who obtained an overseas doctorate degree and with outstanding academic achievements, the required years of working may be reduced).
  • Applicants conduct relevant research in Physics and/or Astronomy and have made influential contributions and research achievements, with the potential to become leading scientists or outstanding talents in related fields.
  • Applicants have not yet returned to work in China on a full-time basis or have returned (or come) to work in China after January 1, 2021. The successful applicants will be required to resign from the overseas jobs and to guarantee full-time work in China for at least three years.

Funding and Supports

  • NSFC will provide a fund of RMB 1-3 million for a three-year period.
  • Additionally, according to relevant policies of Shanghai authority and SJTU, we will provide attractive remuneration package, research start-up funds, well-decorated transitional talent apartments and relevant housing subsidies, high-quality medical services, as well as preferential admission policies and conditions for applicants’ children.

Eligible applicants shall sign a labor contract or an intention agreement with his/her supporting institute in accordance with requirements of relevant guide, and then log into the information system (https://isisn.nsfc.gov.cn/) after February 15, 2022 to complete the Application for NSFC Excellent Young Scholars Fund (Overseas) online. Applicants shall be responsible for the authenticity of application materials.
