2020 Summer School to Physics Teachers of High Schools in Shanghai

2021-01-17

On the morning of July 17, 2020 Summer School to Physics Teachers of High Schools in Shanghai hosted by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission and the Shanghai Science and Technology Association opened at the Shanghai Science Hall. SJTU contributed to this summer school class and participated in the organization and teaching.

At the opening ceremony, Mr. Xinghua Huang, a member of the Shanghai Science and Technology Association Party Leadership Group and Second-Level Inspector, and Mr. Yongzhi Li, Deputy Director of the Shanghai Education Commission, delivered speeches respectively.

Prof. Yipeng Jing, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Dean of the School of Physics and Astronomy of SJTU, and Director of the Astrophysics Division, TDLI conducted a report entitled An Overview of Astronomy and Astrophysics. He said that astronomy and astrophysics is not only an ancient science, but also a modern science. In recent years, the frontier exploration of astronomy and astrophysics has made great progress, but not so many domestic students engaged in the researches in this field comparing with foreign countries. Then he talked about the theoretical basis and observational tests of cosmology. He believed that cosmology, as a huge physical scale, can also be combined with microscopic elementary particles. The physical properties of the microscopic elementary particle neutrinos and the physical nature of dark energy can be explored by conducting galaxy redshift surveys. After the reports, Jing answered the questions of the teachers.

Prof. Yugang Ma, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences from Fudan University and Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics, CAS, conducted a report entitled An Overview of Nuclear Physics. He introduced the history of nuclear physics research in China, including the Beijing Electron Positron Collider which Prof. T. D. Lee advised and assisted in the early 1980s.  Ma also summarized the research led by China and other international cooperation group, such as ATLAS in the high-energy physics.

This summer school included lectures and teaching courses and lasted for 7 days. More than 10 Professors from SJTU, Fudan University, East China Normal University, Shanghai University, Shanghai Institute of Technology and Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, CAS gave theoretical and experimental courses such as Classical Physics, Mechanics, Electromagnetics, Optical Physics, Astrophysics, Quantum physics, etc. This summer school was held both online and offline, and combined with teaching and discussion. There are more than 80 middle school physics teachers registered to participate.

This summer school was based on the resources of academicians and experts from Shanghai Physics Society, Shanghai Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, Shanghai Laser Society, etc., and aims to systematically train high school teachers on comprehensive knowledge of physics, delivering new knowledge, new ideas and new methods of physics teaching to high schools.
