Prof. T. D. Lee once said that science and art are two sides of the same coin. On the morning of June 6th, the " First Lesson of Science and Art- Activities of 2020 SJTU T. D. Lee Science and Art Lecture Fund" was successfully launched. In order to promote the integration of science and art and carry out cross-disciplinary innovation and creative practice, T. D. Lee Library, T. D. Lee Institute and the School of Design organized several lessons to seven classes of the Department of Design, Architecture and Landscape, embed the idea of science and art into the two main online courses of School of Design. Prof. Fanqiang Kong and Bin Duan from the School of Design were the hosts and Sheng Li from TDLI gave a lecture titled From the Planet to the Spin of Particles, and Xuwei Chen from T. D. Lee Library gave a lecuture titled There is a Path between Mysteries and Mysteries. More than 100 freshman students from School of Design and 30 students and teachers from other schools gathered together. Prof. Chuilin Wang of China Advanced Science and Technology Center, Party Secretary Yushan Dong, Deputy Secretary Jijun Yuan, Yi Sun etc, Director of Special Collections Service Department of SJTU Library and others also attended the lecture.
Firstly, Xuwei Chen introduced Prof. T. D. Lee’s concept of science and art, shared the design idea of L. D. Lee Library, told the story of Prof. T. D. Lee and the art masters in the process of scientific art creation, and decrypted the deep meaning behind the science and art works. As Guanzhong Wu said, "Scientifically explores the mysteries of the universe, art explores the mysteries of emotions, and there is a path between mysteries and mysteries." Young students were hoped to be encouraged to actively explore a beneficial path of science and art through T. D. Lee Science and Art Lecture Fund of SJTU as a platform.
Subsequently, Sheng Li gave a science lecture on Spin, which is 2020's scientific theme. He cut into the macroscopic spin phenomena of fans, propellers, gears, etc., introduced the physical concepts of angular momentum, moment of inertia, conservation of angular momentum, precession, etc., and then introduced the topic to the study of particle spin in the microscopic world, by introducing plum pudding model of atoms. Early important studies such as the model, Rutherford scattering experiment, Bohr atomic model, Zeeman effect, Stern-Gerlach experiment, and Pauli exclusion principle, showed the historical evolution of particle spin research. Finally, he introduced the important characteristics of particle spin and the application research status, future developments and existing problems in related fields.
During the interactive session, Shikang Wen, the First Prize winner of the 2019 SJTU T. D. Lee Science and Art Competition shared his learning history and experience in scientific art painting creation, encouraging students to think and act, from creativity to practice, and solve problems actively to create ideal works. Finally, teachers and students from various fields discussed and exchanged views on science and art creation. The students would create their own works on the theme of their choice, and there would be some discussions and creative comments in the later courses.
During the past six years, T. D. Lee Science and Art Lecture Fund Series of SJTU has been aimed at spreading and promoting the spirit of science and art, helping to cultivate outstanding talents, building platforms and bridges for cooperation between science and art, and driving and promoting related universities' thinking and practice on the integration of the cultivation of innovative talents.
Activities of 2020 T. D. Lee Science and Art Lecture Fund was fully launched. Due to the impact of the epidemic, some break through would be made in this activity. Online classes, online science and art workshops, online exhibitions and other online activities were hold for scientists, artists and young students, focusing on the integration and innovation of science and art, to provide a high-level online interactive communication platform and build a new mode of science and art education.
