2020-06-10

The special event of international dark matter day 2019 at Shanghai was held in Shanghai Library on November 3. Zhou Ning, a special researcher of the School of Physics and Astronomy of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, who is a main member of the dark matter detection experimental group PandaX and Zu Ying, a special researcher of the Department of Astronomy, made wonderful science popularization lectures for more than 300 Shanghai citizens.

In the Lecture, Zu Ying mainly talked about what is dark matter, how dark matter is discovered and confirmed from astronomical observation, and the important influence of dark matter on physics and astronomy. Zhou Ning mainly introduced how PandaX experiment carried out direct dark matter detection in Jinping underground laboratory, Sichuan Province, and the important achievements. After the lectures, the two reporters had a heated discussion with the audience, including why dark matter has not been found yet, the international position of China in dark matter research, the impact of dark matter on daily life and other related topics. This activity not only carried out the popularization of dark matter research to the public, but also greatly enhanced the public's confidence in the scientific strength of China's relevant research.

Yang Yong, another core member of PandaX and special researcher of the School of Physics and Astronomy of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, also participated in the special event of international dark matter day held in Beijing on October 31, and made a report entitled "Dark Matter Catcher — PandaX Project".

"Dark matter day" is a global science popularization activity sponsored by the Interactions Collaboration,. Its members are mainly composed of particle physics laboratories in the world. This is the second activity in China. The participants included Tsung-Dao Lee Institute, School of Physics and Astronomy, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Institute of High Energy of Chinese Academy of Sciences, China Science and Technology Museum, Science and Technology Facilities Council of English National Research and Innovation Agency, Shanghai Library, and Science and Technology Commission of Shijingshan District, Beijing.
